At our core, we value our team above all. We’re always on the lookout for skilled, committed people who will help Horizon build a better future: engineers, technicians, communications specialists, sales. We’ll post all open positions here, so please keep circling back!

Electrical Engineer (Battery Systems)

The Horizon team needs an enthusiastic, experienced Design Engineer for Battery Systems with detailed knowledge of their subject, able to provide guidance and advice to others, and develop solutions from first principles. The role includes liaison with suppliers, in-house engineering support for all technical development, and applying technical and theoretical expertise to deliver small projects or components of larger projects.
This is a unique opportunity to join a leading company in the brand new eVTOL sector, and learn about aircraft systems, their development, production, and evolution, as we develop our prototype and certified platforms.

Daily responsibilities include:

  • Lead the design and development of high voltage battery systems including enclosures, battery management systems, bus bars, modules, etc.
  • Own the prototype development; end to end including requirements, design, BOM, procurement, assembly, test, etc.
  • Develop & implement safety protocols for handling & working around high voltage battery systems
  • Develop testing procedures and perform/manage testing of new designs
  • Develop verification testing strategies and see your designs through rigorous process intensive testing
  • Create and review technical drawings, plans, and specifications
  • Support requirements development and documentation
  • Develop supply chain and lead procurement for the designs you own
  • Collaborate with our multi-disciplinary engineering team
  • Specify, design, develop and test the battery management systems (BMS) for the energy storage system that will integrate with the Horizon Hybrid power system
  • Drive the resolution of cross-functional issues including those related to architecture (performance, power consumption, thermal behavior), development (schematic design, PCB layout and overall system integration), and production (quality, failure analysis, manufacturing, cost).
  • Develop electronic control boards for battery cell measurement and battery management with a start-to-finish ownership of hardware – from requirements to design, development, verification, and manufacturing
    • Integrate BMS with hybrid control system
    • In charge of schematic, layout and PCB assembly design and review
    • Design and carry out prototype verification tests for proof of concept
    • Analyze test data and reports to determine if the design meets functional and performance requirements
    • Troubleshoot and help root cause any issues that occur in the prototype line

Ideally, you’ll fit the following profile:

  • 5+ years experience developing high voltage electronic hardware for battery management or power systems
  • BS or MS Degree in Electrical Engineering/Embedded/Computer Hardware Engineering
  • Strong EE fundamentals in electronic circuit design/development with microcontroller-based embedded system
  • Experience in using schematic development and circuit simulation software
  • Proficient PCB layout experience is strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of battery or power systems algorithms and how hardware design decisions influence system performance
  • Experience with board layout and designing circuits for operation in EMI environments such as automotive, military or similar environments
  • Experience with high density and high reliability PCBA interconnection design
  • Solid understanding of size, weight, power, processing and cost constraints needed by real-time, embedded platforms
  • Good knowledge of inter-module communications protocols
  • Experience with configuring and testing battery management or high-power circuits / systems
  • Experience working with high voltage systems
  • Master of all types of lab instruments: oscilloscope, data acquisition systems, etc.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills

Role requirements:

  • Significant professional experience (in aerospace industry, or within adjacencies or areas of specialism)
  • Proficient in CAD (Solidworks, NX, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Mil-Spec fasteners
  • Experience with SLS
  • Fluent in GD&T
  • Hands-on experience with high voltage battery or power system design and development
  • Hands-on experience in multiple technical fields especially those related to carbon composite and metallic structures
  • Ability to communicate effectively and clearly
  • Positive can-do attitude
  • Sound knowledge and hands-on experience in traditional and modern power electronic technologies including (not limited to):
    • Inverter technology for variable speed motor drive (MOSFET, rectifiers and gate driver PWM technologies)
    • Passive power devices, e.g. inductors, capacitors, resistors and transformers
    • Power electronics system architecture design and hardware integration
    • Motor drive and power converters (AC-DC, DC-DC, DC-AC) control technologies
    • Motor control and commutation methods for various types of three phase motors
  • PCB layout experience is strongly preferred
  • Master of all types of lab instruments: oscilloscope, EMC analyzers etc.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
